FAQs

Registration and Advanced Planning

Classes will be taught at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. No prior Dalcroze experience is necessary.
Included in the registration fee are a Conference T-shirt (if registered by June 1) and group photo, opening reception Sunday evening, continental breakfast on Monday (Week 1), Tuesday evening folk dancing (Week 1), and the Thursday picnics the first and third weeks. Participants may observe the children's Eurhythmics classes in the CMU Music Preparatory School on Saturday mornings. 

Carnegie Mellon is an approved provider for Pennsylvania Act 48.
Please check with your institution or district for specific continuing education requirements. To apply credits earned toward the PA Act 48 requirements, or to receive proof of attendance for your local education supervisor, contact us at music-dalcroze@andrew.cmu.edu.

Carnegie Mellon accepts all forms of electronic payment through its registration platforms.

Confirmation of payment and completed registration will be sent to you directly by email within two business days after payment is received.

Scholarships are available through the Dalcroze Society of America. DSA scholarship money can only be applied to registration costs, not housing and parking. Participants may also apply for grant money through foundations and professional music organizations of their choosing.

Participants who withdraw before the first day of classes will receive a full refund minus a $100.00 nonrefundable registration fee. Participants who withdraw on or after the first day of classes will not receive a refund. This does not include housing and parking registration, which must be addressed through the Carnegie Mellon Conference and Event Services office.

The Opening Reception is on the Sunday before the first day of the workshops in the College of Fine Arts building, Alumni Concert Hall.

International Folk Dancing is on Tuesday evening of the first week of the workshops.
Evening Picnics are on the first and third Thursdays at Neelyhouse in the Regent Square neighborhood.

Weekends are free for relaxation, practice, shopping, or sightseeing.
Additionally, one-week and three-week participants are invited to observe the CMU Preparatory School Eurhythmics classes on Saturday mornings. 

Bring casual clothing suitable for movement. Be prepared to move in bare feet or soft non-skid slippers. Pittsburgh can be very hot and humid in July. Because of air-conditioning in some buildings, dressing in layers is advisable. If you are staying in on-campus housing, you should plan to bring your own hangers (none are provided in the dorms) and a fan. Be sure to bring a pencil and notebook. If participating in the optional yoga classes, please bring a yoga mat. The MSDTC asks for everyone's cooperation in our efforts to provide a scent-free environment for our students and faculty. Scented products can trigger mild to severe reactions such as respiratory distress and headaches— please help us by not wearing/using these products when attending the workshops.

Class, Coursework, and Exams

Classes will be in the Margaret Morrison Building, Hall of Arts and/or College of Fine Arts Building. See DTC Map and Campus Map.
Recording by any means, analog or digital (audio, video, laptop computer, ipod, etc.) is strictly prohibited.
All students participate in piano improvisation classes. These classes are offered according to piano skill and improvisation experience, and are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
Demonstration classes (children, high school, or senior citizen) are offered every summer and may be scheduled during afternoon Pedagogy sessions. Participants may also observe Saturday morning children's classes in the Carnegie Mellon Music Preparatory School by special arrangement. 
A minimum of two summer sessions of the Three-Week Workshop, totaling 18 units or 6 credits must be successfully completed at Carnegie Mellon before applicants are eligible to apply to take the required exams for the Dalcroze Certificate. Each workshop participant who is eligible for university credit may receive an official transcript, at no additional cost, by request. Information about ordering transcripts is available here. Please note that requested transcripts are generated after the end of the Carnegie Mellon summer semester— usually the second week of August.

Facilities, Housing, and Meals

Participants will have 24/7 access to practice rooms in the College of Fine Arts building. In the past, some participants have brought portable keyboards for practice in the dormitory (earphones should be used). See DTC Map.
Yes. A guest network will grant access to the internet. You will be able to use your personal devices by following a simple registration process when you arrive on campus.
A variety of prepared food is available for purchase on campus or within easy walking distance. Meals are not included in the housing fee.
Each dormitory suite has a microwave and small refrigerator. Food markets are accessible by public transportation. There is also a convenience store located in the University Center building.
Carnegie Mellon University offers state-of-the-art facilities for all students and faculty to use. Our indoor pool, aerobic rooms, weight rooms, exercise machines, basketball, racquetball & squash courts are located in the University Center (one-time $40 fee). The football field and tennis courts are located centrally on campus. Athletic facility access is subject to change.

We recommend that attendees to the summer workshops purchase a parking pass to the East Campus Garage through the Online Housing Registration site. Scroll to the bottom of this page for information about on-campus parking. Also see DTC Map.

International Students

Non-citizens may attend in one of two ways. Registrants attending as tourists may travel to the United to participate in the workshops, but are not eligilble for university credit or Carnegie Mellon transcripts. Registrants attending the workshops for university credit must have an F-1 student visa; the deadline to submit application materials to the Carnegie Mellon Office of International Education is May 1st.
