Flute Literature & Repertoire Class

mixing a recording for a demo CD

This course provides students with an array of activities related to flute playing and students' careers that are only partially covered by their regular studio class, including:

  • Orchestral excerpt practice and presentation
  • Solo repertoire
  • Chamber music
  • Introduction to world music
  • Book, video, and new repertoire reviews

The class offers a friendly environment in which students of different levels and backgrounds can share their musical experiences while gaining the widest possible exposure to styles, traditions, approaches and tendencies that are part of present-day professional music life.

Recent projects of the class include:
  • Collaboration with artist Michael Pestel in the commission of a work for 9 flutes by Carnegie Mellon composer Efrain Amaya. "Bird House" was premiered at the National Aviary of Pittsburgh.
  • Class with Robert Johnson of Flute Specialists Inc., on flute repair and maintenance
  • Production of publicity material and recording and engineering a CD for the class' flute trio and quartet
  • Collaboration with Carnegie Mellon Recording Studio
