Application Requirements

All applicants to the Master of Music, Master of Science, Advanced Music Studies Certificate, or Artist Diploma program must complete the following application requirements by December 1. Please be sure to review the audition/portfolio requirements for your program of choice. Incomplete Artist Diploma applications will not be considered.

  • Submit the School of Music’s online application.
  • Pay the $125.00 application and audition fee online using a credit card.
  • Upload any pre-screening materials with the application.

Programs that require Pre-screening or Portfolio Submission:

  • Master of Music or Master of Science: Composition, Conducting, Flute, Piano, Technology, Violin, or Voice
  • Artist Diploma: Performance or Composition
  • Advanced Music Studies: Composition, Audio Recording & Production, Flute, Piano, Violin, or Voice

If you chose recorded audition in your School of Music online application, you will also upload your final recorded audition/portfolio. 

Music Education applicants may optionally submit sample lesson plans, teaching materials, or other supporting documents to the application (Please limit the scope and amount of these materials.)

Additional materials must be received by January 10 for your application to be considered:

  • Three letters of recommendation
    (submitted through the online application)
  • Official Transcripts from most recent college/university
    (desired minimum GPA: 3.0)
  • Test Scores: 
    • Students whose native language is not English must submit an official TOEFL or IELTS score.
      (TOEFL code 2074; Department Humanities - Music 19)
    • Music & Technology (MS) applicants must submit an official GRE score.
      (Institution Code 2074; Department Arts - Performance and Studio – Music 2404)

Master of Music Education applicants should also submit their Teaching Certification Records (domestic applicants only).

Current Carnegie Mellon School of Music students must adhere to all of the steps and requirements of the application and admission process to the Artist Diploma without exception. This includes the pre-screening recording and/or materials, which cannot be waived for any reason.
